We've just launched the Technical GEO Checker, a free tool that runs your website through 35 fixed, published checks across seven technical areas that decide whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot can actually reach, read and cite your content. Put in a URL, and you’ll get a pass or fail on each one, in about ten seconds.
| Take the challenge: most brands assume they're in decent shape for AI search, but few have ever actually tested it. This is your chance to find out. |
We speak with a lot of marketers, and they typically assume their SEO efforts are a sufficient base to cover AI-search visibility. However, according to Search Engine Journal, nearly 90% of brands have no AI presence1, while Demand Gen Report cites that 96% of brands appear primarily in queries where buyers already know the company name.2
The confidence brands have is sitting on very little evidence. It’s the same pattern we’ve seen consulting on Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). The marketing team thinks the site's fine, and then the report comes back flagging at least one of the seven categories nobody's checked.
We’ve built the Technical GEO Checker to not only provide your score, but to reveal the pass condition for each of the 35 checks, ensuring the result is the same whoever runs it. Here's what separates a site that's still developing from one that's actually leading, category by category.
|
Category |
Still developing |
Actually leading |
|
Crawler access and permissions |
Robots.txt says nothing about GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, whatever the CMS shipped with by default |
Every major AI crawler is explicitly allowed or blocked on purpose, and reviewed as new ones appear |
|
Crawl path and fetch economics |
Sitemap out of date, key pages sit several clicks deep, redirect chains slow every fetch down |
Sitemap is current, important pages are a couple of hops away, nothing unnecessary standing in the way |
|
Renderable content |
Copy, pricing and product detail only exist once client-side JavaScript has run |
The substance of the page is already there in the raw HTML response |
|
Parseability and extraction structure |
Long unstructured blocks of text, navigation and boilerplate tangled up with the actual content |
Clear heading hierarchy and semantic HTML, so a model can lift the right passage cleanly |
|
Structured data and entity graph |
No schema, or a template's schema that doesn't actually match the page |
Accurate, consistent markup that resolves the organisation, product and author to one identity everywhere |
|
Provenance and freshness signals |
No visible author, no published or updated date, no machine-readable signal of who's behind the page |
Authorship, dates and organisation identity are all present and machine-readable |
|
Indexation directives and citation surface |
Leftover noindex tags from an old migration or staging environment, no clear position on citation |
Directives are deliberate and current, with an intentional answer to what should be indexed and cited |
Most sites we run through this process land closer to the left-hand column than the right. It's a reflection of where the market actually is. The gap between the two columns is also the fastest set of fixes most brands can make, because none of it depends on rewriting the content, only on how it's delivered.
| Take the challenge |
Run your own site through it, and find out if your website is one of the ~20% that block at least one major AI crawler outright.3 You could unknowingly be one of them, hampering your efforts to get cited in AI-generated responses. If your website passes, there are likely further improvements the tool will highlight to enhance your AI-search efforts.
As the name indicates, the Technical GEO Checker only looks at the technical markers enabling AI systems to reach, read and attribute the page. It doesn't tell you whether the AI recommends you over a competitor, describes you accurately, or ranks you at all in the categories your buyers are asking about. That's what our AI-search visibility programme is built to aid in three stages: Basecamp benchmarks where you sit against competitors, Ascend does the technical and content work that the fix list points to, and Summit keeps monitoring as models and rankings shift.
The Technical GEO Checker is free, self-serve and open to anyone. Don't forget to share the results with your web team. If needed, talk to us about closing any gaps that get revealed.
